About Saratov
Saratov is a major Volga River port and one of the largest cultural, educational and scientific centres in southern Russia. The city was founded in 1590 as a fortress on the southern borders of the Russian state, and today stretches along the right bank of the Volga, about 860 km south-east of Moscow.
Saratov is home to one of the oldest classical universities in the country, together with more than a dozen other higher-education institutions, and hosts a number of research institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Opera and ballet (1875), drama (1967) and young spectator (1918) theatres, a conservatoire (1912), a circus (1876) and a philharmonic society (1937) contribute to the city's traditional cultural life. Machine-building, oil-refining and chemical industries are well developed in the region.

Late June in Saratov is usually warm and sunny, typical of the beginning of the Volga summer. Occasional short thunderstorms are possible, so a light jacket and an umbrella are recommended. More precise guidance will be issued closer to the symposium.
